Which single lens should I start with?
The FE 24-105mm f/4 G. Its wide-to-portrait range covers the most real-world shooting of any one lens, and its stabilisation pairs with the a7 IV's IBIS. If you shoot in low light a lot, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 is the value alternative.
Do I need expensive G Master lenses?
No. Sony's f/1.8 primes and Tamron/Sigma zooms are superb and much cheaper. G Masters buy you the last few percent of sharpness, weather sealing and bokeh — worth it for pros, overkill for most a7 IV owners.
Can I use vintage or adapted lenses?
Yes — the short E-mount flange adapts almost anything. Manual vintage glass gives the a7 IV character for very little money. Check any pairing in the simulator first.
